$VERSION numbers should be computed from the repository

Ouch, will revert this change at least for "my" plugins as soon as I return from
holidays.
$VERSIONs are like tags, not like revisions. At least
I handle them
this way. Support breaks too as versions aren't monoton any
more. Next objection, I keep
NatSkin and
NatSkinPlugin versions in sync.
Version jumps reflect the amount of changes that took place
informally. So
if one revision incures lots of changes I jump up several minors. If something
fundamental changes I jump up a major. This is quite common practice
so don't mess with those version numbers ariy, please.

You are obviously free to do that, but I made that change for very good reasons:
- revision numbers give a perfect picture of the source code, if there is ever a bug report
- revision numbers are much easier to automate
Perhaps it was precipitate to steal $VERSION that way, but I had to do something fast. After a discussion on IRC we have agreed we need a standard for this, so we are going to add RELEASE i.e.
RELEASE = 'Dakar'; VERSION = '$Rev';
no asusmptions about the format of RELEASE will be made, so plugins authors can use it for infomal tracking.
