Detail

Regarding "If you are behind a firewall that blocks access to CPAN, you can build a local CPAN mini-mirror, as described at http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/BuildingDakar#CPAN_local_minimirror": The Codev.BuildingDakar is mainly geard towards developers. It would be helpful to update the supplemental CPAN docs for admins at TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules, and to point the installation instructions to that topic instead of Codev.BuildingDakar.

Good point.

This is a doc requirement, so changing component to Documentation.

CC

Request for oppinons: In TWiki:Codev.TWikiOnRedHat I have written a section "Install the CPAN modules required by TWiki"

It describes how to install CPAN libs other ways than using CPAN. There is no need to make a mini-mirror just because you are behind a firewall. That is more needed for a shared host situation where the admin will not install CPAN libs you need.

Behind Firewall a better alternative is to install the CPAN libs as packages. TWikiOnRedHat describes the packages needed for RedHat/Centos/Fedora.

I think it would be nice if we could gather similar data for other distros.

Maybe if some of you using Debian, Gentoo, Suse, Mandriva could list wat they are called and I could try and gather that in a supplentary doc that we link to from INSTALL.html.

I fixed this with the actions in Item3497

* Given the already existing Supplementary document TWiki:TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules a prominent position on TWiki:TWiki.SupplementalDocument. We cannot put everything there but CPAN lib installation is high on the commonly asked questions we get so this one should be there in the Installation section. * Given the TWiki:TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules 3 links in the TWikiInstallationGuide topic which is compiled to INSTALL.html when you build TWiki. * Given TWiki:TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules a major extension so it also covers installing from modules like RPMs and debs and Gentoo. I hope I got things right for Debian and Gentoo.

Left is to change the link in misc plugins from BuildingDakar to TWiki:TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules

The text is auto inserted by BuildContrib so I only need to change it there.

I find it TWiki:Codec.NerdoMeter level 5 or 6 asking people to install a CPAN mirror just to install a plugin. Then it is much easier to tell people to pre-install the required CPAN lib as described in TWiki:TWiki.HowToInstallCpanModules. So that is what I do.

The plugin text in Plugins web will be updated each time a new plugin version is released. I will not re-release them all just for this doc change.
