We have actually deprecated these back in October 2006 replacing them with the much more flexible NEWLINKFORMAT setting.

For some reason the NEWTOPICLINKSYMBOL still exists but is only used if NEWLINKFORMAT is not defined.

In my view this can be removed as well in 4.2 just hardcoding the ?-mark as default when NEWLINKFORMAT is not defined. It is a TWiki:Codev.NerdoMeter level 6 to have this extra little unnecessary setting which sometimes comes to effect seen from the point of view of the user.

So my proposal is, remove the NEWLINKFORMAT from the code.

I can do the change when I return from vacation if people agree.
