Yeah, I use to regularly fall into that trap. And typically I have to look up the correct integer, which I find annoying.

What would you think about adding a "mnemonic" rendering shortcut like %PIPE% or %VBAR% to TWiki.TWikiPreferences?

Set PIPE = |

Or simply escaping pipe symbols. ! is the "TWiki standard escape" so !| could translate to &124;
