In an earlier bug (
Item2771, see
towards the bottom) I explain that the printable view brakes all my
TWikiApplications now (since it overrides "template"). We need to fix this in 4.1, so we should not write the fact that
?template=viewprint
is used for printing into the doco, or at least, we should comment that this may change.
Well, it
is used for the print view.
AC
Yes, but that makes it impossible to have a printview for any
TWikiApplication using topic-specifc templates. That is unacceptable. We therefore have to work out something else. --
TW
I still think this is an edge case.
AC
This is a duplicate of the earlier reported
Item2771. There is nothing new in this report other than an attempt to re-trigger a discussion.
So far there has not been much agreement with the discussion on Item2771.
This bug item was raised as a requirement which means a release blocker of 4.1.
We are NOT going to change the entire print scheme now.
I agree with AC that this is an edge case where TW has taken advantage of skins and heavily customized templates for twiki apps.
If we suddenly change the way have the printable view many other people's applications will break and we will see a flood of new bug reports and 4.1 is going to be a spring release and not a December 2006 release. We cannot take the 4.1 release hostage this way.
KJL
No, Ken, this is not a duplicate. I moved
Item2771 as an enhancement. I just want to make sure we do not document something that has not been thought out to its consequence and be stuck with it. Please read
the problem description. This is unacceptable behavior.
So all I am asking is to not make something permanent by documenting it. Luckily enough, this was not documented in 4.0, albeit implemented. Please take the time to study this problem, I really think it is serious. --
TW
I understand and appreciate your enthusiasm for getting the release out. But we have a large number of users relying on TWiki that do rely on printable view working correctly. So I want to make sure we leave our options open to fix this. It is not necessary to document the current behavior, as a user does not care how the template has been implemented. Note that this was implemented in 4.0, and was not documented then either... --
TW
Is it documented now?
If it is - where?
If not - how would this bug item get closed?
I am discarding again. You can reopen if you can point to the documents that have to be fixed.
I have also set
Item2771 to urgent. The last aspect you raised is a problem.
KJL
Thanks.
This is the only place:
http://develop.twiki.org/~twiki4/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/TWikiSkins
, about 1/2 way down is a list of templates for the pattern skin. The last line is
I suggest to take this line out, or comment that this mechanism may change.
All I want is to keep our options open. If I cannot come up with a reasonable mechanism that solves the problem for 4.2, fine. If you think that this line above is not committing us to anything either, than great and we can close this....
Please advise. --
TW
Obviously, if
Item2771 is fixed in this release, we don't need this change. But I assumed that
Item2771 was outside the scope of this release. --
TW
Thomas. I think you should add a note that this may change in the next version of TWiki and set this bug to "Waiting for release" with that action.
I have already changed the title of this bug item so we get a good entry in the release note for this fact.
KJL
With the resolution of
Item2771 this has been made unnecessary, as there is no longer a template
viewprint.pattern.tmpl
. I have not documented that printing uses the
view.printpattern.tmpl
template, just in case we will make further changes. Please advise. --
