I also noticed that the group write permissions were not set on the pub/_work_area/MailerContrib/* files. This seem to cause the same behaviour as AlokNarula and MartinMoss are seeing.

The directory is constructed using the permissions of the first user to construct the dir. If that's the webserver user, it's made using their umask. If it's another user who runs the cron, then it's theirs. The point is that the dir has to be writable by whoever runs the cron, and there should be no problem as long as that's the webserver user.

There isn't any automation that can really help here.
