In view.pattern.tmpl I would like to change the contents of %TMPL:DEF{"topicaction"}%, but then the string around the edit button produces garble. It only works right if there is a <div%gt; with a newline before it.

Original (no problems):

%TMPL:DEF{"topicaction"}%<a name="Actions"> </a><span class="twikiHidden"><br /></span><div class="patternTopicAction"><span class="patternActionButtons">
%TMPL:P{context="inactive" then="inactive_edit" else="active_edit"}%

New (garble):

%TMPL:P{context="inactive" then="inactive_edit" else="active_edit"}%
" rel="nofollow" title='Edit this topic text' accesskey="E">Edit

That was a nasty can of worms.

The basic reason was the crap way %META was being expanded by a separate function, rather than by declaring a tag handler for it. Like Cairo, the parser was completely brainless and was getting matching close brackets badly wrong. So I did something I should have done ages ago, and moved meta to a tag handler. In the process I discovered that it was wierdly documented. And that there was a number of bugs to do with top revisions that no-one had spotted before.
