All references within the official distribution have updated. Will look at the remaining >2200 references within plugins later on. I think changing them is no problem for the contributers as it is easily mergeable for them.

How about compatibility with older TWiki installations? I cannot package plugins and say: Sorry you must have the newest TWiki version.

... I will revert all SVN changes related to this item for all my plugins (Checklist[Table]Plugin,
TimeTablePlugin,
RackPlannerPlugin,
HolidaylistPlugin) to get it work with my TWiki installation

You´re right, new TWiki releases are compatible to "old style" plugins but not the old Versions with the "new style". Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hopefully I didn´t step on too much toes with the change. Maybe a good reason to stay up to date.
Just finishing updating the plugins.

I am unsure if it is a good idea to close this item until at solution is found for installs without the SYSTEMWEB variables.
- Even if it is just adding documentation for each the affected plugins that the variables need to be available/defined in the installation.
