Detail

I came across this need when a TWiki application, (A test management system) had grown over 25k topics and had to be split across several webs.

As a simple Example, In TestWeb, we have defined TestCase. A TestRun is an instance of a TestCase, run with different configurations.

TestRun -> TestCase

We pulled the TestRuns out of TestWeb, say TestRunWeb, and left the TestCases in TestWeb. For the reference in the Form of the TestRun to link properly to the referenced TestCase, we now have to have:

$META:FIELD{name="TestCase"......value="ExampleTestCase"}%

transformed to

$META:FIELD{name="TestCase"......value="TestWeb.ExampleTestCase"}%

It becomes an issue when we use a %SEARCH{}% to List the TestRuns, we use the form element "TestCase" from TestRuns to use as a display name:

%SEARCH{search="TestRuns".......format="[[$topic][$formfield(TestCase)]"}%

which now looks really ugly, since the link will render to "TestWeb.ExampleTestCase", which is misleading. We need to cut off the WebName. I initially tried a Plugin extension, but I ran into rendering problem when nested with the SpreadSheetPlugin, it wouldn't come out right.

For example:

%CALC{$NOP($perSEARCH{"TestRuns"....)$per}% format=[[$topic][$percntWEBCHOP($formfield(TestCase)}$percnt]]}%

It would be nice to have something similar to $pattern for $formfield.

For now, to get my system to work, I did a little hack in Render.pm to allow it to strip off the Web, with the following syntax:

$formfield(TestCase, -</br>, noweb)

Here is the change:

> my @params = split( /\s*\,\s*/, $args, 3 );
> if ( $params[2] =~ m/noweb/i ) {

This kind of new feature should be raised as a feature proposal.

  • It ensures the feature is discussed by the community
  • It makes it more likely to not be ignored

If you can find a committed developer willing to implement it - it is even better because then you are assured that the community deals with it.
