There are two versions of changes

The two produce differnt results since the latter performs a search, and that may have to honour access restictions. The latter uses the default %SEARCH formatting.

However the visual presentation of each is different beyond what can be accounted for simply by fact that the WebChanges is limited to 50 items and has a footnote offering more.

  • WebChanges shows date as well as time
  • /bin/changes doesn't show date and its view of the content of the topics is ... strange. It shows strikeout.

The core code for both is in TWiki::UI::Changes so I can only presume the difference has something to do with the templates.

While we may understnad the differneces, from the end users POV this is just 'changes' and the two differnt dispalys seem inconsistent and distrubing.

No, the core code is not the same. WebChanges is done by a search, changes is a stand-alone script. changes works the way it does because it can. The differences are: - changes can show major differences only, or all differences,
  • changes is able to see the differences between two revs of a topic, whereas SEARCH cannot.

The issue of not showing the date is a bug, now fixed. SVN 4413
