CPAN:Locale::Maketext::Lexicon

CPAN:Encode is the only other module required for perl 5.8.x (right?), which is shipped with perl 5.8 (so says configure)

  • IIRC, perl 5.8.0 had quite a few problems, and its use should be discouraged.

and, AFAICT, user interface I18N isn't working with perl 5.6.x (see table below) Note that with perl 5.6.x, CPAN:Encode isn't installed (and the latest version of CPAN:Encode can't be installed with perl 5.6.x, as it requires perl 5.7.3, but as i understand things, CPAN:Encode isn't used with perl 5.6.x). maybe this will never work with perl 5.6, as there were major improvements in perl 5.8 related to unicode. i'm ok with mandating perl 5.8 for I18N, if that's what we have to do, we just need to state that if it's the case.

  • p.s., assuming perl 5.6 can be made to work, what about perl 5.5 support? it's still listed as supported.

perl 5.8.4 perl 5.6.1
works Y Y Y Y N N
CPAN modules(1,2) N N Y Y Y Y
{UseLocale} N Y N Y N Y

1 CPAN modules for perl 5.6.1: CPAN:Locale::Maketext::Lexicon CPAN:Unicode::String CPAN:Unicode:MapUTF8, CPAN:Unicode::Map, CPAN:Unicode:Map8, and CPAN:Jcode
2 CPAN modules for perl 5.8.4: CPAN:Locale::Maketext::Lexicon CPAN:Encode

configure actually conspires in this confusion, by listing the CPAN module version numbers of modules that aren't actually required (well, unless none of this works under perl 5.6, in which case it needs to issue a different warning). i don't mind updating configure to deal with perl version-specific module requirements, i just want to understand what those requirements are before doing a bunch of refactoring which may end up being deleted in the end.

Documented this in TWiki:Codev.UserInterfaceInternationalisation#System_requirements_for_I18N + added notes to DakarReleaseNotes (SVN 6592).

Can someone explain why Perl 5.6 doesn't work for message text I18N? UTF-8 URL encoding is doing a similar job from UTF-8 to any character set - I found that Unicode::MapUTF8 and related modules worked fine. From CPAN:Unicode::MapUTF8, it can be used to convert between any two character sets as long as there's a Unicode conversion to and from the source and destination character sets, e.g.:

# Convert between two arbitrary (but largely compatible) charset encodings
# (SJIS to EUC-JP)
my $utf8_string   = to_utf8({ -string =>$sjis_string, -charset => 'sjis'});
my $euc_jp_string = from_utf8({ -string => $utf8_string, -charset => 'euc-jp' })

Also, I've updated the text above to say 'message text I18N' - 'I18N' alone means more than this.

In fact, I believed that the probleams with conversion in develop.twiki.org and in the machine Will and Arthur use to run Dakar instances were due to Perl 5.6, and since Will couldn't make it work I assumed that Perl 5.6 was the problem.

But I bootstraped a Debian Woody chroot with Perl 5.6 and configured a fresh Dakar checkout. It worked fine, I just had to install CPAN:Unicode::MapUTF8 (obviously).

????

So, I'll remove the requirement por Perl >= 5.8.

Will, could you investigate a bit more why conversion did not work on that machine you use with Perl 5.6 ? If you want in the next weekend we can check this together.

Closing this; please don't let that stop the conversation, it's just that it keeps pinging on my radar as something Urgent and it clearly isn't frown CC
