Does this site look broken?. Use the LitterTray web for test cases.

The internationalization and locaization framework is great.

Small suggestion: A user typically sets the language just once in lifetime. The "Change language" link at the top of the sidebar is too prominent and adds clutter. Better to move that elsewhere, at least to the bottom of the sidebar, better to the user preferences.

I agree in principle, it is too prominent where it is.
However my experience with many users is that they don't dig around to see if they can find something like this, they'll just bitch about it all being in English or just acept that its in English.

What might make sense is to have a language selection on the registration form. However, since the form details now go into the metadata, some other accomodations would be needed. -- TWiki:Main.AntonAylward

i'm sticking my comments here, "out of order", because what's below is really about the jump/search box and not "change language"

i also think it is too prominent, not only in a graphic design sense, but also in a usability sense: people will rarely use it! why? you seem to be forgetting that it should default to the "right thing" because twiki picks up the language preferences from the user's browser. so, rarely will someone actually change the language setting. for that reason, it can be much more hidden.

also, let's keep in perspective what this button actually does: it changes the language of the TWiki User Interface, that's "it". it doesn't change the topic next (well, not yet anyway... wink )

oh, and maybe %ICON{"flag"}% could be used, too?

The link could go below or above the Jump box, in a small font size. -- AC

I'd prefer that. MC

I seem to recall that elsewehre AC mentiond that the jump box is the first thign to eb removed form the top bar. Its certainly the first thing I remove! I usually put it in the lefr menu, sort of like WIkiPedia.

The new "Twisty' mechanism - which should be in the core, q.v. - offers opportunites to shrink the left bar. That makes great sense if you have a lot of webs. Make the list of webs twist in-out. So why can't we somehow devise a Twisty for all the stuff that is 'use only one in a while if ever'?

-- AJA

I too would like left bar twisties, in my case for hierarchical webs. I read/write sync all the webs from 5 sites down to my laptop - I have literally 30 or so subwebs listed.

We need to move the twisty conv to another topic...

-- MC

off topic jump box stugg moved to Bugs.Item586

is there a change planned for this, or will I close / defer it as unloved? -- SD

I am working on moving the language link. AC
To where? Too intrusive if below Jump box. I suggest to:
  • Do a simple workaround for Dakar by moving it to the bottom of the sidebar
  • Think about where a better place is in Edinburgh (e.g. user prefs)

-- PTh

I have moved the link to the top bar. SVN 7006. -- AC
