The default permissions are dangerous. The new data dir is 777, to make things easier for thickheads like me who can never get their heads wrapped around unix permissions properly, but I bet this state of "default world writeable" will cause problems. Not everybody will go back and fix them.

the installer says it doesn't touch the distro dictory, this isn't entirely true. rcs.log is written there

Are the messages echoed to screen logged somewhere? A lot of "wrirte this stuff down 'cause you need to use it later" stuff goes by and my scroll back buffer is too small to get all of them.
