Issues with FormattedSearch $summary: (used to work in Cairo)

  1. Interwiki links are linked
  2. If the first word in the topic is a WikiWord it gets linked
  3. Wikiword links to other webs contain webname (text Otherweb.TopicName is shown as Otherweb.TopicName instead of TopicName)

Usability: A summary should not have any formatting or linking since it draws attention away from more important parts of a page

Bug (not verified): RSS feeds might break because they use $summary.

Test case: Compare Dakar with TWiki.org

I don't agree with your usability claim, and I consider that links in rss feeds (as in escaped html) is a vital feature we need to work out. (the rss feeds do indeed break when you have a link in a heading frown )

-- SD

For compatibility we need to keep the summary unformatted. If you feel there is a need for a formatted summary, how about a new $summary(formatted) flag?

-- PTh

compaitbility with what? if it renders differently, but does not break things, then thats an improvment. 1&2 don't seem to me to be a problem, 3 and RSS obviously need to be fixed - I was considering something like $summary(verbatim) as its obviously the less useful case

-- SD

My goal is simply to be compatible with Cairo, which is irrelevant to the "more useful case" (which is debatable). Some Cairo TWiki applications use the summary, those apps would behave differently if there are links in the summary (such as inviting users to deviate from the workflow.) So if an enhancement then with a $summary(formatted) flag.

Case 1, 2 breaks RSS feeds.

-- PTh

the code that does this is horrible. i've commited a partially finished version

svn:7219 - added RSS version of makeSummary and getFormField, and re-wrote takeoutBlocks, and made protectPlainText work for $summary (commented out the old version of the code as i'm sure there's somethign very wrong - i'll look at this again tomorrow)

looks like it works smile -- SD

No, it doesn't. See Item1097. Reverted this change, since it's almost impossible to generate valid HTML when formatting a "fragment".

Reverted in SVN 7735.
