A simple example
Notice the huge space above?
in konqueror there is an equal space above and below the verbatim block - could you at least give us some idea of what browsers you're using? -- SD
Win IE, Firefox, Mac Safari show 1 line above and 1 line below the block. -- AC
I'm using Firefox on Linux. The space above and below is balanced, and one line doens't seem "huge". AC are you saying there shouldn't be any space? -- AJA
I am using Win IE. As you can see from the attached, there are two lines of space below and one line above the verbatim. There should only be one line below. (Personally, I think it should be much less than a line on both sides, e.g., 1/2 line, but that is a separate issue.) -- TW
I see. This looks like a bug. What version of IE you have?

-- AC

With longer verbatim text, a scroll area appears so the verbatim text does not make the page wider. But Win/IE puts the scrollbar at the same line as the text, thereby obscuring the text itself. The pre block therefore gets a bottom padding of 1.5em. But this looks very high on Win/IE.

I don't have a solution.

Solution found: http://browservulsel.blogspot.com/2005/04/ie-overflow-auto-scrollbar-overlap.html

Final code:

/* put overflow pre in a scroll area */
pre {
    margin:1em 0; /* Win IE tries to make this bigger otherwise */
html>body pre { /* hide from IE */
   /*\*/ overflow:auto !important; /* */ overflow:scroll; width:auto; /* for Mac Safari */
* html pre {
   padding-bottom:expression(this.scrollWidth > this.offsetWidth ? 16 : 0);
